How to Identify the Gas Cylinder Activation Type on Your Aeron Classic Chair

Today, we’re going to show you how to determine whether your Aeron Classic chair has a top or side-activated gas cylinder. Without further ado, let’s get started.

Step 1: Remove the Top Cover of the Clamshell Mechanism

To begin, you need to remove the top cover of the clamshell mechanism underneath the Aeron chair. There are three clips that you need to release to remove the top portion of the clamshell. Here’s how to do it:

1. Identify the Clips:

•The clips are located in three places: two in the front (noted by small cutouts on the bottom side of the clamshell) and one near a larger hole.

2. Release the Clips:

•It’s easier to release the clips from the inside. Insert your tool where the cutouts are to release the two front clips, then do the same for the side clip.

•I prefer using a plastic trim removal tool to minimize damage, but a flathead screwdriver or even a butter knife will work.

3. Flip the Chair Over:

•Once the top clamshell is removed, flip the chair back over for better visibility.

Step 2: Identify the Cylinder Type

With the chair flipped over, look at where the cylinder connects:

1. Top-Activated Chair:

•If you see a lever with a set screw on top of the cylinder, you have a top-activated chair.

2. Side-Activated Chair:

•If you see a lever with a cable hooked into the top of the cylinder, you have a side-activated chair.

Step 3: Reinstall the Clamshell Mechanism Cover

After identifying your cylinder type, reinstall the clamshell cover:

1. Align the Clips:

•Align the two front clips with their receiving pieces and rotate the cover down into place.

2. Secure the Clips:

•Ensure all clips are properly secured by pressing around the clamshell cover.

3. Check the Cables:

•Make sure all cables are correctly positioned and nothing is obstructed.

Your Aeron Classic chair is now back in place with the clamshell cover securely fastened.
