Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing the Gas Cylinder on a Steelcase Criterion Chair

Introduction

Today I’m here to guide you through the process of replacing the gas cylinder on a Steelcase Criterion chair. This tutorial also applies to Steelcase Protege, Rapport, Sensor, Rally, and a few other chairs. Follow along, and you’ll have your chair fixed up in no time!

Tools and Materials Needed

•Bearing Kit

•New Cylinder

•Flathead Screwdriver

•Awl

•Hammer

•5/8 Inch Deep Well Socket

Step 1: Flip the Chair Over

First, flip your chair over on a solid surface to give you better access to the components.

Step 2: Remove the Bottom Clip and Plastic Tube

Using your flathead screwdriver, remove the bottom clip and release the plastic tube. You should now be able to lift the base off the chair.

Step 3: Remove Old Lock Rings and Lock Washer

Take your awl and carefully dig out the old lock rings and the lock washer. You’ll want to work the awl into the lock rings until you can pry them out. Once you’ve removed them, you can take the old cylinder out of the housing.

Step 4: Insert the New Cylinder

With the old cylinder removed, it’s time to insert the new one. Place the cylinder with the correct end down into the housing. Begin by inserting the lock ring washer first.

Step 5: Secure the Cylinder with Lock Rings

Now, take the first lock ring and secure it using a 5/8 inch deep well socket. Place the socket over the cylinder and gently hammer it down until the lock ring is securely in place. Repeat this process with the second lock ring.

Step 6: Test the Cylinder

Before proceeding, it’s a good idea to test the new cylinder. Press the seat height lever and step away; the cylinder should extend upward if everything is working correctly.

Step 7: Assemble the Bearing Kit

Next, it’s time to assemble the bearing kit. Start by placing the rubber bumper on the cylinder, followed by a black washer, then the white bearing, and finally, another black washer.

Step 8: Reattach the Base

Carefully place the base back onto the chair over the cylinder. Ensure the cylinder pops out the bottom, and then press down on the black housing until it snaps into place. You may have a silver washer to place on top, followed by the gold clip to secure everything.
